Gibraltar Travel Guide - Sightseeing, Hotel, Restaurant & Shopping Highlights
Thursday 2 October 2014
BOOK DESCRIPTION
Gibraltar is one of the most intriguing of holiday destinations. Although located on an outcrop attached to the Spanish mainland, it has for more than two centuries been the proud possession of the United Kingdom. The Rock is Gibraltar is home to the only primate species to occur on the European continent - Barbary Macaques. As these large apes can also be found in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, it could be speculated that they arrived here with the Moors. An alternate theory suggests the possibility that they were once prolific across much of Europe, but had grown extinct everywhere but here. A persistent legend states that as long as the Barbary Macaques endure, so will the British rule of Gibraltar. Among the famous people who have celebrated their happy nuptials on the Rock are John Lennon and Yoko Ono, as well as two James Bonds - Sean Connery and Roger Moore.
